Aadhaar Update: What You Can Fix Online and What Needs the Kendra

The definitive split — name, address, DOB and gender online via myAadhaar; mobile, photo and biometrics only at a centre. Limits, fees and proofs inside.

Aadhaar Update: What You Can Fix Online and What Needs the Kendra

Quick answer

  • Name, address, date of birth, gender — update online at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in (only if your mobile is linked to Aadhaar).
  • Mobile number, photo, fingerprints/iris — Aadhaar Seva Kendra only; no website can do these.
  • Confused about proofs or limits? WhatsApp us at 91155 52911 and we sort it end to end.

Half the people who walk into an Aadhaar centre did not need to come — their update worked from a phone. The other half spent an hour on myAadhaar trying an update that only a centre can do. One rule decides everything, and once you know it, Aadhaar updates stop being a mystery.

The one rule that decides everything

Demographic details — the text printed on your card — can be changed online. Anything involving your body or your phone — biometrics, photo, mobile number — needs you physically present at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorised enrolment centre, because an operator must capture it live.

And there is a gatekeeper: online updates only work if your current mobile number is linked to Aadhaar, because every step is OTP-verified. No linked mobile means no OTP, which means the centre — for everything.

What you want to changeOnline (myAadhaar)Aadhaar Seva Kendra
AddressYesYes
Name (spelling / after marriage)Yes, with proofYes
Date of birthYes, with proofYes
GenderYesYes
Mobile numberNoCentre only
PhotoNoCentre only
Fingerprints / irisNoCentre only

Note: UIDAI has toggled online availability of some fields over the years — if a field is greyed out on myAadhaar, the centre route always works.

Lifetime limits UIDAI enforces — do not waste an attempt

These are not per-year limits. As per UIDAI rules, you can change your name twice in a lifetime, your date of birth once, and your gender once. Address and mobile have no such cap.

This is why "I'll fix the spelling roughly now and properly later" is a terrible plan. Decide the exact final spelling — matching your PAN and bank records — before you submit, because the second name change is the last one you get without an exception process.

Fees — small, official, and worth knowing

₹50
Demographic update — name, address, DOB, gender (as per UIDAI, subject to change)
₹100
Biometric update — photo, fingerprints, iris (mobile update rides along free with it)
₹0
During UIDAI's free online document-update windows — check myAadhaar before paying

UIDAI announces free online document-update windows from time to time and has extended them repeatedly. If you only need to refresh your proof documents, check whether a free window is running before paying anything. Anyone charging you several hundred rupees "extra" at a centre is overcharging — the official rates are on uidai.gov.in.

Proof documents that actually get accepted

Address proofbank passbook/statement, electricity or water bill (recent), rent agreement (registered), passport
  • ✍️
Name proofPAN card, passport, marksheet with photo, marriage certificate for post-marriage change
  • 🎂
Date of birth proofbirth certificate, class 10 certificate, passport — DOB has the strictest checking of all
  • 📱

Upload rules for online: clear colour scan or photo of the original, all corners visible, under the size limit shown on the portal. Blurry uploads are the most common rejection reason UIDAI cites.

Updating online on myAadhaar, step by step

Open myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in

Use the official portal only — ignore lookalike sites that charge for forms.

Log in with Aadhaar + OTP

Enter your Aadhaar number and the captcha; the OTP comes to your linked mobile. No linked mobile? Stop — you need the centre first.

Choose the update type

Pick Address Update (or Document Update / the relevant demographic field). Read which proofs are accepted before proceeding.

Enter the new details exactly

Type the name or address exactly as on your proof document — even a missing initial can trigger rejection.

Upload one valid proof

A sharp, complete scan of the original document, within the size limit.

Pay ₹50 and save your URN

Pay online and note the 14-digit Update Request Number — it is your only tracking handle.

Tracking your URN — and what the statuses mean

Use Check Aadhaar Update Status on myAadhaar with your Aadhaar number and URN. Most online demographic updates clear within days, though UIDAI allows itself longer. Under review means a human is checking your proof. Rejected comes with a reason — almost always an unclear document or a detail mismatch — and you can reapply with a better proof; the fee is not refunded.

Once approved, download the updated e-Aadhaar PDF instantly from the same portal. The printed letter follows by post, but the PDF is equally valid everywhere.

The mistakes that block everything else

⚠️
Common mistake: an unlinked or dead mobile number. Without it, no OTP works — no online update, no e-Aadhaar download, no DigiLocker, no bank e-KYC. Fix the mobile at a centre first; every other service unlocks after that.

The second silent killer: a name mismatch between Aadhaar and PAN. Even one letter's difference can break PAN–Aadhaar linking, hold up ITR e-verification and freeze KYC at banks. Align both to one exact spelling — and remember the name-change limit while doing it.

💡
Insider tip: at the Seva Kendra, ask the operator to update your mobile and photo in the same sitting as any biometric update — one ₹100 visit covers them, instead of two trips and two tokens.
Fix your mobile number first. Nine out of ten Aadhaar problems we see are really just an old phone number wearing a disguise.

FAQs

Quick answers

No. Mobile number, photo and fingerprint/iris updates can only be done in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorised centre, because they need live verification. Only demographic details — name, address, date of birth, gender — can be updated online, and even those need an already-linked mobile for the OTP.

As per UIDAI rules: name twice in a lifetime, date of birth once, gender once. Address and mobile number have no such cap. Decide the exact final spelling — matching PAN and bank records — before using an attempt.

Around ₹50 for a demographic update and ₹100 for a biometric update, as per UIDAI and subject to change. UIDAI also runs free online document-update windows from time to time — check myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in before paying. Anyone demanding several hundred rupees extra is overcharging.

Yes. WhatsApp 91155 52911 with your issue — we identify the right route (online or centre), prepare the correct proof documents, file the online update where possible and track the URN till your updated e-Aadhaar arrives. We are a private service provider, not affiliated with UIDAI.
