Your family must prove succession — legal-heir or succession certificates, affidavits from all heirs, and EPFO processing that stretches for months. The EDLI insurance payout (up to ₹7 lakh as per EPFO, subject to change) goes through the same grind. A filed nomination replaces all of that with a direct claim by the person you named.
