GST registration gives your business a GSTIN, lets you charge and claim tax, and is often required by suppliers and marketplaces. This 2026 checklist covers when you must register, the documents you need, and the step-by-step process on the official GST portal.
When GST is mandatory
You must register for GST if any of these apply:
- Turnover threshold: generally over ₹40 lakh for goods and ₹20 lakh for services (lower in some special-category states).
- Inter-state supply: selling goods from one state to another.
- E-commerce: selling through platforms like Amazon or Flipkart.
- Other cases: casual taxable persons, agents, and businesses under reverse charge.
Even below the limit, some businesses register voluntarily to claim input tax credit and look more credible. Thresholds are subject to change, so confirm current limits on gst.gov.in.
Documents checklist
- PAN of the business / owner / partners
- Aadhaar of the owner or partners
- Passport-size photo of the owner / partners
- Business proof — partnership deed, or certificate of incorporation for a company/LLP
- Address proof of the place of business — electricity bill, rent agreement, or property papers (with an NOC if rented)
- Bank details — cancelled cheque or bank statement
Step-by-step on gst.gov.in

- Verify & submit. Submit using DSC, e-Sign or EVC (with Aadhaar authentication).

We complete GST registration correctly and get your GSTIN without the back-and-forth.Timeline & GSTIN
If your documents are in order and Aadhaar authentication is successful, GST registration is usually processed within a few working days. If the officer raises a query, it can take longer — respond quickly to avoid rejection. Once approved, your 15-digit GSTIN and certificate are available for download from the portal.
Tip: Keep your business address proof and rent agreement (with owner's NOC) clean and readable. Blurry or mismatched address documents are the most common reason GST applications get stuck.
After registration (returns)
Registration is only the start — you then have to file GST returns on time, even for months with no sales (nil returns). Depending on your scheme, that usually means monthly or quarterly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, plus an annual return. Late filing brings late fees and interest, so set reminders or let us handle it.
