A small mistake in your Aadhaar — wrong spelling, old address or an unlinked mobile number — can block a bank account, SIM or government scheme. The good news: most Aadhaar details can be corrected quickly. Here's what you can update, the documents you need, the official fees and the exact process.
What you can update
- Name — spelling correction or change after marriage
- Address — the easiest to do online
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Mobile number & email
- Photo and biometrics (fingerprints, iris)
Documents required for each change
- Name: PAN, passport, voter ID, or a government-issued photo ID showing the correct name.
- Address: passport, bank passbook/statement, electricity or water bill, ration card, rent agreement, or other valid proof of address.
- Date of birth: birth certificate, passport, PAN, or a recognised proof of date of birth.
- Mobile number / photo / biometrics: no proof document needed, but you must visit an Aadhaar centre in person.
Always carry the original and a clear self-attested copy. UIDAI updates its accepted-document list from time to time, so check uidai.gov.in for the current list.
Online (myAadhaar) vs at an Aadhaar centre
Online via myAadhaar: best for demographic updates — name, address, date of birth and gender. Log in at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in with your Aadhaar number and OTP (your mobile must be linked), then submit the change with a scanned proof.
At an Aadhaar centre: needed for mobile number, photo and biometrics (fingerprints, iris). Book a slot or walk in, give your details, and pay the fee.
Not sure which document counts as valid proof?
We'll check your documents and get your Aadhaar update done right the first time.Official fees (as per UIDAI, subject to change)
- Demographic update (name, address, DOB, etc.): around ₹50.
- Biometric update (fingerprints, iris, photo): around ₹100.
These amounts are set by UIDAI and can change. Confirm the current fee at the centre or on the official UIDAI website.
Tip: Make sure the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar is one you actually use. Almost every online update and OTP login depends on it — if it's an old number, update it at a centre first.
How to check update status
- When you submit any update, you get a URN (Update Request Number) or an acknowledgement slip.
- Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and use the Check Aadhaar Update Status option.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and URN to see whether the update is in progress or completed.
- Once done, download the updated e-Aadhaar as a PDF.
